Silent Alarm ile adanın en iyisi ünvanını alan Bloc Party benzer bir başarıyı A Weekend in the City ile yakalayıp ikinci albüm sendromunundan alnının akıyla çıkmıştı hatırlayacak olursanız. Ne var ki Flux single'ı ile kendi big bang'ini yaşayan ekip, son olarak Mercury'i ile üzerine kurgulanan onca beklentiyi bir güzel yıkmıştı. Intimacy adlı yeni albüm öncesi korkulansa albümde kaç tane Mercury olacağıydı. Ve beklenen olmuştu.. Ares, Halo ve Mercury'e albümün sevimsiz üçüzleri olacaktı. İşin aslı buldukları yeni formül grubun da bundan sonraki izleyeceği yolu işaret ediyordu. Vokal efektleri, hoyratça kullanılan vokoder aleti, bol keseden synthler geride kalan ruh. Üsütne üstlük full bağıran Kele Okereke. Artık niye bağırıyorsa.. Ta ki Biko'ya gelene dek. Intimacy'deki ilk tenefüs olan Biko'yu da Trojan Horse bölüyor. Sings kendi halinde akan sakin bir delilik nöbeti olarak ikinci nefesken One Month Off ve Zepherus'da Kele yine bağırıyor. I Still Remember'ı hatırlatan Ion Square ve Better Than Worse adlı son iki mükemmel kayıtla gider ayak işi kurtarıyorlar

Richard Ashcroft sağ olsun, ardı ardına çıkardığı birbirinden çaresiz 3 albümle Verve'ün atmosferinde savruldukça savrulmuştu. Ekip, 11 yıl ara sonrası geri dönüşünü müjdeleyince Ashcroft'tan bir süre daha solo albüm duymayacağımız sebebiyle yeterince mutlu olmuştuk. Urban Hymns ile kendi zirvesini yaşayan ekibin, Fourth'taki performansı merak konusuydu şüphesiz. Olduğundan hep daha büyük görünen Veve cephesinde yeni açılımlar bulmak bir hayli zor. Onlar yine en büyük olmaya gelmişler. Yine canavar sound, yine stadyum için bestelenen şarkılar. Sit and Wander ile stadyuma giriş başlıyor. Ana grup Doors. İlk single Love Is Noise şişen bir balon gibi. Dolu dolu söyleyen Richard'a, back köpek vokali de eşlik edince 5.5 dakikalık şarkı bitmek bilmiyor. Rather Be albümde çok olan Urban Hymns b-side'ları gibi. Judas, Puressence'ı hatırlatan melodisi ve Ashcroft'un pesten çıkan sesiyle temiz bir iş. Numbness 70'lerin uzayda hayat var edalı kafa üteleyici şarkılarından. I see Houses ekibin kendisini en minimal kullandığı, basit piyano melodisiyle albümün en iyilerinden. Noise Epic adı gibi gürültü efsanesi olmaya aday, garage rock gruplarını anımsatan, hadi çalıyoruz, kralız biz edası ile Primal Scream'ı iriliğinde Manchester sound saçmalığı. Valium Skies kesinlike Sonnet, Bittersweet Symphony hatta Urban Hymns'ın özeti gibi. Sanki Marianne Faithfull söylüyor. Faithfull da Ashcroft gibi ilhamı Mick Jagger'dan aldıydı. 7 dakika 17 saniyelik bir The Verve şarkısı olsa olsa yeni bir kabus alametidir değil mi? Öyledir. Ama bu sefer öyle değil! Columbo kendi içinde öylesine formülüze edilmiş ki heyecan verici bir kayıt ortaya çıkmış. Albümü kapatan Appalachian Springs ise bir diğer 7 küsur dakikalık şarkı olmasına karşın görkemli bir veda, adeta başyapıt.

Santogold nasıl M.I.A. jenerasyonu -ki pop alternatif trend- devamıysa Lady GaGa -Stefani Germanotta- da Britney-Xtina ve devamı dance me night - fuck me night kuşağının son gözdesi. Bu arada Britney'nin yeni albümünde 2 şarkı için çalışan Lady GaGa da pop kartlarını iyi seçenlerden. Kabul ki glam disko havası hayli yerinde, üzerine de RedOne gibi pop'un Mark Ronson, Diplo'su gibi -Shakira, Akon, Brandy, Enrique Iglesias, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie ve kalanları ile çalışan- bir ismi arkasına almış. Arkasına almış demişken Lady GaGa geçtiğimiz günlerde biseksüel olduğunu açıkladı. Biseksüel çağrışımlar pop sularında çok tutar batmazsınız. Ödül töreninde ışıklar kapanmadan önce hemcins varislerinizi dudaklarından yalayabilirsiniz ya da videolarda şelale altında lambada dansı yapabilirsiniz ama ben erkekle de yatarım kızla da şak demek her babayiğidin harcı değildir. Biz bu yüzden Lady GaGa'yı selamlıyoruz. Bir diğer selam da 2008 superstarlarından birisi olmasına az kaldığı için gelsin.
